Quick Facts
Aluminium Guide
What Is Aluminium?
Aluminium is a lightweight metal with about one third the density of steel, good strength when alloyed, and natural resistance to corrosion thanks to a thin oxide layer. It is easy to cut, machine and form, and it conducts heat and electricity well. MECH TECH ENGINEERS EQUIPMENTS TRADING LLC supplies aluminium in a range of alloys and forms from Musaffah, Abu Dhabi, for fabricators, shipyards, machine shops and decorative contractors who want strength without excess weight.
Common Alloys and Their Uses
Alloy 6061 is the all-round structural alloy, with good strength, weldability and corrosion resistance, used for frames, fixtures and machined parts. Alloy 6082 offers slightly higher strength and is widely used for structural sections. Alloy 5083 is a marine-grade sheet and plate alloy with excellent resistance to seawater and strong welded properties, making it popular in shipbuilding. Alloy 7075 is a very high strength alloy used for demanding machined components, although it is less suitable for welding. Alloy 1100 is almost pure aluminium, soft and easy to form, and used for chemical equipment and decorative work.
Available Forms
We supply aluminium as round bar, flat bar, sheet and plate, angle and channel, and tube. Round bar is machined into shafts, bushes and fittings. Flat bar and angle are used for frames, brackets and supports. Sheet and plate are used for panels, covers, tanks, cladding and interior fit-outs, and tube suits handrails and light structures. Specify the alloy, temper, thickness or diameter and length when you enquire so that we can confirm availability. We can also cut material to size on request.
Machining, Fabrication and Handling
Aluminium machines quickly with sharp tools and good chip clearance, and a lubricant helps to prevent the soft metal from sticking to the cutting edge. For welding, choose the correct filler wire and clean the surface carefully to remove the oxide layer. Because it is relatively soft, aluminium can scratch easily, so protect finished surfaces with film and store sheets flat. Keep aluminium separate from steel in storage to avoid galvanic corrosion in damp conditions. We are happy to advise on the right alloy for marine, structural and decorative uses.
