Carbon & Alloy Steel Guide
What Is Carbon and Alloy Steel?
Carbon steel is iron combined mainly with carbon, while alloy steel adds elements such as chromium, molybdenum, nickel and manganese to improve strength, toughness and hardenability. Together they form the backbone of mechanical engineering, because they can be machined, heat treated and welded to produce shafts, gears, pins and structural parts. MECH TECH ENGINEERS EQUIPMENTS TRADING LLC supplies engineering-grade carbon and alloy steels in Abu Dhabi for workshops, equipment makers and maintenance teams who need reliable material for demanding components.
Common Grades and Their Properties
EN8 is a medium carbon steel widely used for general engineering parts such as shafts, studs and bolts, and it responds well to hardening. EN9 offers higher carbon for greater strength and wear resistance. EN19 and 4140 are chromium-molybdenum alloy steels with a good balance of strength and toughness, popular for axles, spindles and hydraulic parts. EN24 and 4340 are nickel-chromium-molybdenum steels with excellent toughness and high strength after heat treatment, suited to heavily loaded gears and shafts. S355 is a structural steel grade used where welded strength is required in frames and fabrications.
Selecting the Right Steel
Start by defining the load, the shape of the part and whether it will be heat treated. For lightly loaded parts that need easy machining, EN8 is often enough. For shafts that face bending, torsion or shock loads, a through-hardening alloy grade such as EN19, EN24 or 4140 is usually a better fit. Large sections need steels with enough hardenability to harden through to the core. Round bar, flat bar, plate and hollow bar are available, and hollow bar can save machining time on sleeves and bushes. Share your drawing or description and we will help you choose a suitable grade and size.
Machining, Heat Treatment and Storage
Carbon and alloy steels are typically supplied in a condition that can be machined and then heat treated, depending on the grade. Allow for distortion and finish grinding when you plan tight tolerances after hardening. Alloy steels may need preheating before welding, so follow an appropriate procedure to avoid cracking. Because these steels can rust, protect bars with a light coat of oil and store them under cover. We can cut bars and plates to length on request, helping you reduce wastage and speed up production.
