What Is Bronze?
Bronze is a family of copper alloys in which the main alloying element is typically tin, aluminium, silicon or another metal other than zinc. Bronzes are known for outstanding wear resistance, low friction against steel, strength and good resistance to corrosion, especially in seawater. Common Bronze Grades
Phosphor bronze, such as PB1, contains tin and a little phosphorus. It is hard-wearing and resilient, and it is widely used for bushes, bearings and worm wheels. Aluminium bronze offers very high strength and excellent resistance to seawater corrosion and cavitation, making it a standard choice for marine propeller parts and heavy duty bearings. Gunmetal, such as LG2, is a tin bronze with zinc and lead that casts and machines well and is used for pump bodies, valves and fittings. SAE 660 is a leaded bearing bronze for medium-load, medium-speed applications.
Forms and Applications
Bronze is available as round bar, hollow bar, plate and flat bar. Hollow bar is especially popular for bushes and sleeves, since the bore is already formed and less material has to be removed. Applications include bearings and bushes, marine and offshore parts, gears and worm wheels, and pump components. Selecting a grade depends on the load, speed, lubrication and environment, so tell us how the part will work and we will guide you towards a suitable alloy and size.
Machining, Lubrication and Storage
Leaded bronzes machine freely, while aluminium bronzes are tougher and need slower speeds and rigid tooling. Because bronze bearings run best against hardened steel shafts, make sure that the mating surface is smooth and properly lubricated. Good lubrication and clean running conditions greatly increase bearing life. Store bronze dry and clean, and handle large sections carefully. We can cut bronze bar and hollow bar to length so that you receive material close to the finished size.
