Cast Iron Guide
What Is Cast Iron Bar?
Cast iron is an iron alloy with a high carbon content, and the carbon appears as graphite flakes or spheres that give the metal its useful character. Continuous cast iron bar is produced as long solid or hollow sections that can be cut and machined into finished parts. MECH TECH ENGINEERS EQUIPMENTS TRADING LLC supplies cast iron bar in Abu Dhabi for machine shops, pump and valve makers and maintenance teams who need dependable material that machines cleanly.
Grey Iron and Ductile Iron
Grey iron, such as grade GG25, contains graphite flakes. It machines very easily, damps vibration well and resists wear, which makes it popular for guides, bushes and machine bases. It is relatively brittle, so it is better under compression than under heavy shock. Ductile iron, also called spheroidal graphite iron, contains graphite in a spherical form which gives much greater strength and toughness. Grades such as 65-45-12 and 80-55-06 offer different balances of ductility and strength, and are used for gears, pump parts and heavily loaded components.
Forms and Typical Applications
Cast iron is supplied in round bar, flat bar, square bar and hollow bar. Hollow bar is particularly useful for bushes and sleeves, because much of the machining has already been done. Typical applications include bushes and sleeves, machine bases, pump and valve parts, guide rails and general wear parts. Choose grey iron for stable, wear-resistant parts that mainly see compression, and ductile iron when you need extra strength, toughness or fatigue resistance. Tell us the part and the load, and we can guide you to a suitable grade.
Machining and Handling Notes
Cast iron produces short, broken chips, so machining is generally easy and tools tend to last well. It can usually be machined dry or with light coolant, and a clean skin on the bar may need a heavier first cut. Welding cast iron is difficult and requires special procedures, so it is normally better to design parts that avoid welding. Keep bars dry to limit surface rust and protect them from hard knocks. We can cut cast iron bar to your required lengths so that it arrives ready for your lathe.
