Die Steel / Tool Steel Guide
What Are Die Steel and Tool Steel?
Tool steels and die steels are high-quality alloy steels designed to cut, form and shape other materials. They are made to resist wear, hold an edge, withstand heat and keep their dimensions through heat treatment. MECH TECH ENGINEERS EQUIPMENTS TRADING LLC supplies tool and die steels from Musaffah, Abu Dhabi, to toolrooms, mould makers, press shops and engineering workshops. Having the right steel is often the difference between a die that lasts and one that fails early, so we help customers choose carefully.
Popular Tool Steel Grades
D2, also known as 1.2379, is a high-carbon, high-chromium cold work steel with outstanding wear resistance, used for blanking dies, punches and slitting knives. O1, or 1.2510, is an oil-hardening steel valued for easy machining and dimensional stability in gauges and general tooling. H13, or 1.2344, is a hot work steel that resists heat checking and softening, which suits die casting dies and extrusion tooling. P20, or 1.2311, and 1.2738 are mould steels commonly used for plastic injection moulds. M2 is a high-speed steel for cutting tools that must stay hard at high temperature.
How to Choose a Tool Steel
Think about the job the tool must do. Cold work tools need wear resistance and toughness at room temperature, while hot work tools must survive repeated heating and cooling. Plastic moulds need good polishability, uniform hardness and often pre-hardened steel to reduce the need for later heat treatment. Production volume matters too, as longer runs justify more wear-resistant grades. Round bar, flat bar, plate and blocks are available so you can start closer to your final shape. If you describe your tool, we can suggest a suitable grade for your plastic mould, press tool or cutting application.
Machining and Heat Treatment Tips
Tool steels are best rough machined, stress relieved and then finished before or after hardening, depending on the grade and the tolerance required. Follow the recommended hardening and tempering cycle for the specific steel, and temper promptly after quenching to avoid cracking. Leave a small grinding allowance on hardened parts, and keep sharp corners to a minimum because they concentrate stress. Protect the steel from rust and impact during storage. We can cut blocks, plates and bars to size on request to reduce the amount of material you need to remove.
