Stainless Steel Guide
What Is Stainless Steel?
Stainless steel is an iron-based alloy that contains at least 10.5 percent chromium. The chromium forms a thin, invisible oxide film on the surface which repairs itself when scratched, and this film is what gives the metal its resistance to rust and staining. At MECH TECH ENGINEERS EQUIPMENTS TRADING LLC we supply stainless steel to fabricators, workshops, maintenance teams and project contractors in Abu Dhabi and across the UAE. Our range covers the bars, plates, sheets and sections that industry uses every day, so you can source shafts, flanges, brackets and fabricated parts from one dependable supplier.
Key Properties of Stainless Steel
Not every stainless steel behaves the same way, because performance depends on composition. Austenitic grades such as 304 and 316 contain nickel, which gives excellent formability, good weldability and strong toughness, and they are non-magnetic in the annealed condition. Grade 316 adds molybdenum to improve resistance to chlorides, which makes it a popular choice for coastal, marine and chemical environments in the Gulf. Grade 310 is valued for heat resistance, while 321 is stabilised with titanium for welded parts that see high temperature. Martensitic grades such as 410 and 420 can be hardened for wear resistance, and 17-4PH offers high strength through precipitation hardening.
Choosing the Right Grade and Form
The best grade depends on where the part will work. Consider the surrounding environment first: salt, chlorides, acids and cleaning chemicals all affect corrosion. Next consider operating temperature, the strength you need, and whether the part will be welded or machined. Round bar suits shafts, pins and fasteners, while flat bar, angle and channel are common for frames and supports. Sheet and plate are used for tanks, covers, guards and process equipment. If you are unsure, send us a description of the application and our team will suggest a suitable grade and size from the stock that is available.
Machining, Fabrication and Handling
Austenitic stainless steels work-harden quickly, so machining is best done with sharp tooling, steady feeds and rigid setups. Use plenty of coolant and avoid letting the tool rub without cutting. For welded fabrications, matching filler metals and clean joints help to retain corrosion resistance, and passivation after fabrication restores the protective surface. Keep stainless steel stored and cut separately from carbon steel so that iron particles do not contaminate the surface and cause rust spots. We can supply stainless steel cut to size on request, which reduces waste and saves time in your workshop.
