What Are Nylon and HDPE?
Nylon, or polyamide, and HDPE, or high density polyethylene, are engineering plastics that replace metals in many applications. They are lightweight, resist corrosion, run quietly and require little lubrication. Properties and Grades
Nylon PA6 offers a good balance of strength, toughness and wear resistance and is widely machined into gears, rollers and bushes. Nylon PA66 is slightly stiffer and handles higher temperatures better. Nylon absorbs some moisture, which can change its dimensions, so allowance should be made in tight tolerance parts. HDPE has excellent chemical resistance, very low moisture absorption, good impact strength and a slippery surface, though it is softer and less rigid than nylon. It is widely used for liners, chopping boards, tanks and wear strips.
Typical Applications
Common uses include gears and rollers, wear strips and guides, bushes and bearings, and chemical tank components and liners. Plastic components reduce noise, weight and wear on mating metal parts, and they do not rust. They also offer electrical insulation, which is valuable in some equipment. Choose nylon where strength and wear matter, and choose HDPE where chemical resistance and moisture are the main concerns. Machining and Care
Nylon and HDPE machine easily with sharp tools, positive rake angles and good cooling to avoid heat build up. Because plastics expand more than metals with temperature, leave suitable clearances in assemblies. Store rod and sheet flat and out of direct sunlight, as prolonged heat or ultraviolet light can affect the material. We can cut rod and sheet to size on request to save you time and wastage.
