Quick Facts
Brass Guide
What Is Brass?
Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, prized for its attractive golden colour, ease of machining and good resistance to corrosion. It conducts electricity and heat well, takes a polish beautifully and is naturally antimicrobial in many conditions. MECH TECH ENGINEERS EQUIPMENTS TRADING LLC supplies brass bar, sheet and tube in Abu Dhabi to manufacturers of valves, fittings, electrical parts and decorative products, as well as to workshops that machine small parts in volume.
Grades and Properties
Free-cutting brass such as CZ121, also known as C36000, contains a small amount of lead that breaks the chips and allows very high machining speeds, making it the favourite for turned parts. CW614N is a widely used free-cutting grade for fittings and fasteners. CZ108 is a more ductile brass which suits cold forming and bending. Naval brass includes a little tin to improve resistance to seawater, so it is used in marine hardware. The proportion of zinc affects the colour, strength and formability of the alloy.
Forms and Applications
Brass is supplied as round bar, hex bar, flat bar, sheet and tube. Hex bar is a popular starting shape for nuts, connectors and fittings, because it reduces the amount of machining. Round bar is used for pins, bushes, valve stems and electrical terminals, while sheet is stamped, formed or engraved for nameplates, architectural trim and decorative items. Typical applications include valves and fittings, electrical components, bushes and fasteners, and decorative parts. Give us your required size and quantity and we will confirm stock.
Machining and Care
Free-cutting brass machines cleanly with positive rake tools and little or no coolant, and it produces a fine surface finish. Brass can be soldered and brazed easily, but welding is more difficult because of zinc fumes, so use proper ventilation. Over time brass develops a natural patina, which can be polished away or protected with a clear lacquer. Where drinking water or food contact is involved, check that the selected alloy suits the regulations that apply to your project. We can cut brass bar to length on request.
