What Are Stainless Steel Pipes?
Stainless steel pipes and tubes are hollow sections used to carry liquids, gases and steam, or to build structures that need strength with low weight. They combine the corrosion resistance of stainless steel with smooth internal surfaces that resist scaling and are easy to keep clean. Seamless, Welded and Tube Forms
Seamless pipe is produced without a longitudinal weld, which makes it a common choice for higher pressure and critical process duties. Welded pipe is formed from strip or plate and welded along its length, offering an economical option for general fluid transfer, structural use and low to medium pressure lines. Round tube, square tube and rectangular tube are widely used for handrails, frames, supports and architectural work. Sizes are normally described by nominal bore or outside diameter together with wall thickness, so please include these details when you send an enquiry.
Grades and Where They Are Used
Grades 304 and 304L are the general-purpose choice for water lines, food and beverage equipment and light chemical service. Grades 316 and 316L include molybdenum for better resistance to chlorides and many acids, so they are favoured for marine, offshore and coastal installations. Duplex 2205 combines high strength with strong resistance to stress corrosion cracking, which allows thinner walls in demanding services. Low-carbon L grades are preferred when pipes will be welded, as they reduce the risk of sensitisation near the weld. Common uses include process piping, water and chemical lines, handrails, structures and heat exchangers.
Cutting, Joining and Care
Stainless steel pipe can be cut with band saws, abrasive saws or orbital cutting equipment, and clean square ends make fit-up and welding easier. Welding should be carried out with suitable filler metal and good gas protection, and internal purging helps to protect the inside of the weld on critical lines. After welding, pickling and passivation restore the protective surface. Store pipe off the ground, away from carbon steel, and keep ends capped to prevent contamination.
